Why Building a Brand is More Important than the Actual Business

That title is a pretty big and bold statement. But, we will tell you that once we started really digging into the idea of branding over business, we found some awesome examples and things to share with you.

This episode is going to get your wheels spinning for sure as we look at what branding really is, why it matters to your success and how you can apply this to your own business, product or service!

Yes, I think this information will be valuable no matter where you are in your journey. Whether you still have an idea in your head or if you have started your business, this could be a game changer for you! I want you to think about the brands or people you follow. What is it about them that makes you look at their social media or their websites? What makes you read or listen to what they have to say?

What exactly is branding? This is a method used to build a strong, positive connection between a brand and its customers. It can help grow your customer base quickly, improve customer loyalty and help increase sales. You need to know what your brand stands for and who it serves. This is key in today’s world that moves so quickly! Branding is not a new concept at all. It’s been around for decades, but it was altered somewhat by the digital age and how much information consumers get each day.

So, for a minute, let’s separate out the Business from the Brand. This will help you gain a better understanding of the two and how it can impact your own business/brand! So, the Definition of a Business: an organization that markets a product, service or opportunity. It’s a thing or place that is serving an offer or product. The definition of a Brand is: the image and personality that the business applies to its offers.

A brand can survive longer than a business. While businesses can come and go (or even evolve and change), the brand will remain. A brand is a part of your legacy and YOU are in charge of how that looks. It is the meaning that people associate with your business, product or service. It is how your customers (& potential customers) view you and what you are offering. Your brand embodies who you are, what you stand for, and what you want others to really know about your business.

That brand is what can help you retain customers, attract new ones, and eventually become profitable. And better yet, it is what sets you apart from the competition and makes you memorable. When it comes time for them to choose the photographer for their child’s first birthday cake smash pictures, YOU stand out to them, because they like your BRAND. You are the one that they want to capture that special milestone. And this can be true of any type of business – the bakery that is your go-to, the caterer you always call for parties, the influencer you watch for clothing suggestions for the next season…I think you see where we are going with this! Yes, you like their products, but even more than that, you like THEM!

YOU and who you are. Be funny, be authentic, and know who you are and that you are so much more than what you are selling. You owe that to your audience! YOU are valuable and have so much to offer. The brand is the vehicle to allow you to truly connect with your audience.

Grab a notebook, or make notes on your phone. We want you to brainstorm – who are you really? What’s the voice behind what you are offering? What sets you apart from your competition? What is YOUR story? What makes you laugh? What makes you cry? And how can you tie all of that into the business you are creating?
